YouTube recommends 1280×720 pixels (16:9 ratio) with a minimum width of 640px. The 1280×720 preset in this tool is perfect for YouTube thumbnails.
For blog featured images, 1200×630 pixels works well for most platforms and social sharing. For smaller inline thumbnails, 300×300 or 150×150 are common choices.
JPEG is usually better for photo-based thumbnails because it produces smaller files. PNG is better when you need transparency or have graphics with sharp edges and text.
A quality setting of 80-90% gives the best balance between file size and visual quality. Below 70%, compression artifacts become noticeable. For web use, 85% is a great default.
This tool creates square or rectangular thumbnails. To make circular thumbnails, you can use CSS border-radius on your website, or use our Profile Picture Crop tool which supports circular cropping.
